My Favorite Things

“My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.”
Steve Jobs
My favorite things:
Mirepoix or soffritto which is garlic, onions and celery, another name is for it is The Holy Trinity. Different countries have their own variations, like leek, parsnips, peppers, garlic, and tomatoes. The three ingredients are commonly known as aromatics.
The term mirepoix dates from the 18th century in French cuisine, named after the Duke of Mirepoix. I use it in many recipes, such as: Bolognese sauce, a white bean and pasta soup, chicken soup, and beef soup. And I have different assortments for chili, and black bean soup.  Basically it is a base that I start out with; I have claimed that at times after adding certain herbs like thyme, rosemary and bay leaves my kitchen smells like church!  Why do I love the trio if it means that; before I start cooking anything all I’m doing is peeling, chopping and crying? Well…..
Trader Joe’s sells mirepoix already cut up and at $2.99 a container, you can’t beat the price or the time you save.  Yes you counted correctly  I did buy 4 at once; I think I was making soup, to freeze, that day and perhaps a tomato sauce that  we fondly call the carrot sauce (I will post the recipes  soon).  The beauty of this product is that any leftovers I have, I use for salads; like tuna salad and chicken salad… once when I was at Trader Joe picking up a container or two, a woman asked why I was buying the mirepoix and then proceeded to tell me that she purchases it for her seafood salad.  By the way if I can’t get to Trader Joe’s I will go the old-fashion way and cut and chop my own carrot, celery and onions. It does save me a lot of time; that’s because I cook on Sundays for the week, so I am cooking several meals at the same time.

Another favorite thing that I just found recently is this package of 3 flour sacks. These are awesome, they clean up messes beautifully.  Shine up my stove and sink without streaks and of course great to filter and drain any water, in foods like frozen chopped spinach, yogurt and cheeses.  These babies are huge measuring 30 x 30, I found these in The Christmas Tree Store; I loved them so much I gave them away as stocking stuffers to my mom, and sisters on Christmas.

Check out this Matryoshka doll – they are actually measuring cups; so glad that I found this set at The Christmas Store.  Love the whimsical touch it adds to my little kitchen.

Last but not least, my paisley teapot and English afternoon tea; and yes I do steep the tea in the teapot….Amelia and I have had tea parties on a Saturday afternoon after all my errands. It’s always sweet to spend time with my girl.

These are a few of my favorite things….. Things that make my life a little bit easier, and, puts me in a good mood so I can claim
