Baby its Cold Out There…..Soups on!
Crock Pot Split Pea Soup
I make this soup often but I never posted it before, because I don’t think Split Pea Soup photographs well!
You can be the judge of that!
I start this soup with a MirePoix…. I love mirepoix; you can read my love for mirepoix here.
So I start with one bag of dry split peas…I place them in a strainer run my hands through them to find any imperfections, stones or dirt., then I rinse them running cold water on the peas.
I buy the MirePoix at trader Joe’s for 2.99 it is already done; chopped celery, onion, and carrots….if I absolutely cannot get to Trader Joe I will chop my own .
I cube or cut one ham steak, Sauté` the Mirepoix (carrots, celery and onions) along with the ham steak, in a pan on the stove until cooked. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, black pepper and Bell’s Poultry Seasoning.
Once everything is sautéed, I assemble into the Crock-pot.
Mirepoix with the ham (that has been sauteed)
Washed dried peas (1 bag of dried peas)
4 cups of low sodium chicken broth
2 cups of water
Add salt and black pepper, only if needed
Cook on high settings for 4 to 5 hours on low 8 to 10 hours on high, after 15 minutes check on the soup and crock-pot and skim any foam that appears on top then give it a good stir.
These ingredients can also be assembled and cooked on the stove as well. Cooking it for about 1 hour 15 minutes, once assembled in a pot on the stove bring to a boil skim any foam and lower heat continue cooking stirring often. This soup can be frozen, then cooked or reheated on the stove. I freeze the soup in a large plastic container – we add 1 1/2 of cup of cooked small macaroni ( small elbows, ditali) or just have pumpernickel croutons with it.
Mangia, Mangia, …No Talk!
I go to Trader Joe's all the time but had never bought the mirepoix. Will definitely give it a try. A little arthritis in my thumbs has made all the chopping harder lately. I have never made split pea soup. Did not like the taste of it when I tried Campbell's as a child. I bet I would love homemade.
I'm so glad you're posting more, Marissa. i do love reading them.
Thank you Dewena; it's a 30 day challenge that I am doing….typical Marisa fashion I just can't do a smaller challenge …its not easy. I'm also writing on SquareKat…..Split pea is yummy we had it last night….warmed us right up can you believe we had some snow this morning, it didn't stick but it made the commute messy. Enjoy the evening 🙂
